2020 got off to a dark start. A few days ago someone I care about quite a bit lost his mother unexpectedly, just days after we’d spent time with her over the holidays making food, talking about life, and laughing together. My heart is broken for my friend and his family and I’m feeling pretty powerless to do anything to make him feel any sort of comfort. And I’m back to work shooting my show. The first few episodes are expanding my creative abilities, utilizing my empathetic skills, and opening up some emotional conversations for both me and my guests. The first client of 2020 lost her husband a year ago and is still battling her way through the depths of grief. Everything we talked about dripped with the subtext of loss. Today, I’m meeting with another client who is approaching a new, exciting chapter of her life. That these people are letting me into their lives, often at incredibly sensitive times where everything is in flux, is not lost on me. What a gift it is to play a role in someone’s healing, or in someone’s building a new life for herself. I don’t really believe in finding false silver linings to sad stories. Some things, like my friend losing his mom, are just terrible things that feel impossible to comprehend. But I’m thankful for a few things. Thankful I got to know my friend’s mother before her passing, that I now know someone whose personality is so innately woven into his. And with work that I have this opportunity to do what I love, creating beautiful spaces, to help people improve their lives and recover from calamitous life events. Sending a little nudge to anyone who might need it if they’re going through a terrible time – you’re not alone. Trying my best to just be an ear, letting those around me know I’m here and am listening, that I won’t act like there’s a way to comfort away things that are impossible to deal with. That’s the best we can do sometimes for the people we love.
